The desert space between construction and meaning in Maghreb novels A descriptive and applied study

Abstract
This study focuses on the desert space in Maghrebi novels, viewing it as a central element that transcends its role as a mere geographical backdrop to become a complex semantic structure carrying philosophical, existential, and cultural meanings. The study posits that the desert in Maghrebi fiction is used to express the tension between modernity and tradition, and between urban and nomadic life, while also reflecting psychological, historical, and social dimensions. Through a descriptive and applied approach, the study analyzes selected Maghrebi novels, highlighting the various narrative functions performed by the desert space, as well as the literary techniques used to depict it. The conclusion calls for further comparative research on desert representation in Maghrebi literature and other world literatures.
