Abstract
Abstract: This article aims to shed light on the importance of travel literature in shaping the image of the Other, based on the premise that such travel narratives serve as primary sources for the observations and accounts recorded by travelers about different peoples. Its significance lies in the ability of these texts to construct diverse representations of the Other, drawing on various political, religious, ethnic, and ideological backgrounds. This was particularly evident in European journeys to the East. Therefore, through this article, I seek to explore the image of Arabs as seen by the Italian traveler Varthema and to reveal its social, religious, and economic dimensions by conveying many scenes from the Arabian desert. The representations varied between positive images—mainly linked to the exploratory and touristic aspects of travel—and negative ones, which were often associated with colonial perspectives
